Mommy Dead and Dearest

In 2017, HBO released the documentary Mommy Dead and Dearest. In 1991, a healthy girl named Gypsy Rose was born. For almost 21 years her mother convinced her that she had very little years left to live. “I would rather spend 10 years in jail than with my mom,” says Gypsy Rose Blanchard.

DeeDee, Gypsy’s mother, claimed that her child had leukemia, muscular dystrophy, vision and hearing impairments, and seizures. She used a wheelchair to move and ate through a feeding tube. Many organizations that helped kids with illnesses had contacted them, such as Habitat for Humanity, Make-A-Wish, and many others.

“I was always so afraid of her-afraid of consequences after,” commented Gypsy Rose Blanchard on her mother. DeeDee loved taking care of people and loved knowing that she was needed. With that being said, she never wanted Gypsy to grow up. Overtime, DeeDee had changed Gypsy’s age. Gypsy was actually born in 1991, however her mother changed it from 1991 to 1993 to 1995. Eventually Gypsy had figured out that she wasn’t sick nor was she 14. In 2009 Gypsy had found the documents. Not only was she not 14, and not 16, but she was 18 years old. She had tried getting away from her mother multiple times, but never could. “I was born to be your mother,” said DeeDee Blanchard.

Gypsy Rose had made a fake Instagram and had planned the whole murder with her online boyfriend. “Gypsy Rose was the mastermind behind the killing,” said Godejohn. Gypsy Rose’s whole life was a lie. She tried escaping her mother and it always failed. Her last choice was to be free from her for good. On June 14, 2014, Gypsy Rose murdered her mother.
